dc.description.abstract[한글] CLINICAL AND MICROBIOLOGICAL STUDY ON THE FUNGUS INFECTION OF THE EXTERNAL AUDITORY CANAL Jun Seo Hong Department of Medical Science Graduate School Yonsei University (Directed by Prof. Joon Lew, M.D. Prof. Gill Ryeung Kim, M.D.) It would seem that the incidence of otomycosis is increasing as the result of topical antibiotic use in the (?)reatment of otitis externa and chronic purulent otitis (?)dia. Otomycosis was first recognized in 1884 by Mayer, who reported the presence of a "mycotic parasite in the pus of a draining ear." And the first to be isolated from the ears was identified as an Aspergillus in 1867 by Prof. Schwartz. Since these initial reports, many fungi have been isolated from patients with otomycosis, and a recent review of the literature on otomycosis by Wolf has revealed that at least 53 different species of fungi have been reported to cause otomycosis. The symptom of otomycosis is variable, and the patients with itching sensation usually scratch their external auditory canal with the fingers, matchstick and hair-pin, and also at the barber-shop. But no works have been done on the fungal flora of the ears in Korea, thou로 they are so fundamentally important. This paper deals with genus and species identifications of the fungal flora in the ears of normal, o.m.p.c., and postoperation cases as well as clinical otomycosis. And this paper includes the results of sensitivity test on the isolated fungal flora with salicylic acid, acetic acid, nyatatin & cresatin in order to obtain the better therapeutic effects.
