dc.description.abstract[한글] EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES ON THE EFFECTS OF THYROLD GLAND TO THE ALLERGIC CHANGES IN MUSCLE DONG HWAN HAN DEPARTMENT OF PATHOLOGY, YUN-SEI UNIVERSITY, SCHOOL OF MEDICINE (Director, Prof. Il Sun Yun) INTRODUCTION: It is well known that the thyroid gland has profound physiological effects on the water, chloride, protein, carbohydrate and fat metabolism. Increase, decrease or cessation of its endocrine function has a great infulence on the various functions of the body. It has also been known that it partioipates directly or indirectly in the production of antibody. Although there have been numerous investigations on the subject of thyroid gland and also of the allergic reactions, there have been very little available data on the influence of thyroid gland to the allergic changes produced in the skeletal muscle. It is the purpose of this paper to report detailed histological changes on the influence of thyroid gland to the experimentally produced allergic reactions seen in the skeletal muscle. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Healthy albino rabbits weighting around 2 Kg were used. the animals were devided into 4 groups in the following manner; 1. On group received thyroidectomy. 2. The second group received thyroidectomy and autotransplantation of thyroid after a certain period of time. 3. The third group of animals received thyroidectomy and later received thyroid extracts. 4. The fourth group constituted the control group. The first 3 groups of animals carried each control group accordingly. Fresh horsed serum was used for antigen. this was injected into the subcutaneous tissue of rabbits 1.0 c.c. per kg. body weight for four consecutive days. Two weeks after sensitization, 0.1 c.c. per kg. body weight of serum was again injected into the muscles of the thigh. Specimen were taken from the sensitized area for histologic studies in the interval of 3 hours, 6 hours, 12 hours, 24 hours, 48 hours, 72 hours, 1 week and two weeks respectively. For the second group surgically removed thyroid glands were implanted into the both sternocleidomastoid muscle. For the third group 0.3 grains per kg. body weight of thyroid tablet (American Pharmaceutical Company) were given daily for two consecutive weeks. RESULTS: The most prominent, rapid and complicated allergic changes were observed in the thyroidectomy group, and the less prominent changes in the second group. The least pronounced changes were observed in the normal control group. It is the conclusion of this writer that the tyroid gland has a significant effects on the experimental allergic reactions produced in the skeletal muscle and that it has a definite inhibitory action.
