Abstract

Anxiety levels.

This study is a descriptive survey research for the investigation of the

relationship between parents' child-rearing attitudes and children's anxiety

levels.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between parents'

child-rearing attitudes and children's anxiety levels and to provide the basic data

for a dynamic approach which is important in the field of modern, psychiatric

nursing that understands and analyzes the meaning of children's behavior.

The subjects of this study were 2265 students selected from one girls' middle

school in Seoul.

I surveyed anxiety from them, selected a higher anxiety group of 88 students and

a normal group of 90 students according to the distribution of grades, and surveyed

a total of 178 students' parents' child-rea-ring attitudes, which was divided for

both parents and children. I used two methods of survey. One was "Self-rating

anxiety Scale"(developed by Zung) for the survey of children's anxiety and the

other was "Parent-Child Relations Scale" (developed by Oh Ki-sun) for the survey of

parents' child-rearing attitudes.

I used SPSS program for the statistic test and computerized it. I compared

X**2-Test for the frequency to test the relationship between the general

characteristics and anxiety levels for each type of parents' child-rearing

attitudes and the percentile for the test of the problems for study with T-test.

The results of this study are as follows.

1. In the comparison of general characteristics of the subjects, the students who

had higher anxiety were lower in the father's scholarly attainments (X=11.54,

P<.001) and those of the mother (X=10.81, P<.001) than the normal students and the

former's parents showed the negative parents' child-rearing attitudes and this was

statistically significant.

2. Compared the students who had higher anxiety with normal students, the

former's father and mother showed much difference in their parents' child-rearing

attitudes and the mother rather than the father treated her children in the more

negative attitude.

3. The students who had higher anxiety rather than their parents perceived in the

more negative attitude than the normal students.

Therefore children's anxiety had more to do with children's perception than the

parents' child-rearing attitudes perceived by their parents, and this was

statistically significant.

From the above results I surveyed that parents' child-rearing attitudes has

something to do with children's anxiety levels according to some types of parents'

child-rearing attitudes.

By mediating the harmony of the relationships between parents and children and

between father and mother.

We can get help in understanding problem behavior which can be caused by their

discord and I hope it will be applicable in actual clinic, too.
