dc.description.abstract[한글] FUNCTIONS OF THE NURSE ON THE NEUROPSYCHIATRIC WARD Ai Ok Choi Department of Nursing, College of Medicine, Yonsei University, seoul, Korea (Directed by Professor Shin Young Hong) The aim of the present study is to evaluate the functions of the nurses working in Neuropsychiatric wards. This study includes 718 patients admitted to the psychiatric ward of Seoul National University Hospital during the period of 4 years from January 1, 1961 to December 31, 1964. The cases were Statistically analyzed and compared with the findings in National Mental Hospital, Yonsei University Hospital, Catholic Medical School Hospital, Soodo Medical school Hospital, Seoul National University Hospital, and University of Minnestota Medical Center in Terms of the number of patients, the ward personnel and specialists responsible for them. The following results were obtained. 1. Of the studies patients schizophrenia comprised 44.5%(320) Mainc-Depressive Reaction 4.4%(32). In sexual distribution male comprised 58.1%(417) and female 41.9%(301). In psychoneurosis females were predominant. 2. First attacks were seen in 52.5%(449) of the cases and more than seven attacks were seen in 3.2%(23). 3. Asthenic body type comprised 40.6%(292), but mixed type was more frequent in Manic-Depressive Reaction and epilepsy. 4. The highest incidence was seen among the primary school graduates. The incidence was also high among high school and college students. There was no sexual difference in incidence. 5. Heredity was seen in 13.5%(97). 6. Usually tranquilizers were used most extensively and the use of Eloctroshock therapy with tranquilizers was increasing in 1964. 7. Complete remission was seen in 17.7%(127), incomplete remission 43.0%(309), no response 23.0%(165) and expiration 1.3%(9). 8. It was known that a psychiatric nurse needs to do the role of psychologist, social worker, and occupational therapist besides her role as a nurse in the present status of psychiatry in Korea. 9. A special program for the education of psychiatric nurse is urgent. 10. Psychiatric nurse is responsible for the education and instruction of patients' families. 11. There were exceptionally few nurses in psychiatric wards of the general hospitals and psychiatric hospitals as compared with other wards in hospitals. Naturally many nurse-aides replaced them. 12. There were no occupational therapist except three non-professionals in National Mental Hospital. 13. Psychiatric nurse ;must help psychiatrist in follow-up care in terms of the family as well as the patient. 14. In this situation it may be impossible to increase the number of specialists in evey field at once. Therefore in order to facilitate the psychiatric care in mental hospitals it is most urgent to increase the number of nurses.
