Abstract

Morphological Study of the Sternum of Korean adult

Department of Medical Science, The Graduate School Yonsei University

(Directed by Prof. In Hyuk Chung, M.D.)

The sternum is a universal structure of the Vertebrate and it shows wide

interspecies and intraspeces variations. During early fetal life a anterior rostral

ruminant and two sternal bands make there appearance and were fused. Later it was

divided into three parts, munubrium, body and xiphoid.

101 cases of the sternum of Korean adult were reviewed and were analyed with a

caution of morphological variation. The results are summerized as follows:

1. The length of the sternum is about 11% of height and the length of manubrium

and body is about 9% of height. The length fo body is aout 2 times longer than the

length of namubrium.

2. The frequency of synostosis between manubrium and body is 25.7%. No remarkable

sexual difference and no correlation with age were demonstrated.

3. The types of the sternum were classified as type Ⅰ(straight type), type

Ⅱ(diviated to the right), type Ⅲ(deviated to the left) according to its

deviations. And when the curvature was present it was subclassified as type

A(cunvex to the right) and type B(convex to the left). The most common type is type

Ⅰ(70.3%) and in 19 cases(18.8$) the curvature was noted.

4. Total numbers of costal notches were seven in most cases(in the right; 68.3%

of total cases, in the left; 66.3% of total cases).

5. The osteophytes are noted in 32 cases(31.7%). They are all located in the

costal notch costal notch and show sharp triangle with its base in costal notch.

The most common site of the osteophytes are the 5th costal notches of both side.
