The morphological details and regional anatomical relationship of the lumvar and sacral nerve roots, which are very unclear in the literature, were studied in male and female Korean cadavers used for dissection in the Dept. of Anatomy, Yonsei University in 1977.
Each of the ventral and dorsal roots of lumbar and sacral spinal nerves perforated the meingeal sac together within same single dural covering without forming the so called intraradicular foramen.
The malformation of two roots within a single meningeal sleeve(5th lumbar and first sacral root)was found in 6.7% of the cadavers.
Most of the first and second lumbar nerve roots closely contacted the inferior surface of the vertebral pedicle forming on angulated course there. However, the remaining lower roots contacted the pedicle moderately or not at all.
The average sizes of the dural covered roots were 2.4mm in diameter and 7.9mm in length for the first lumbar nerve root and 4.6mm in diameter and 13.8mm in length for the first sacral nerve root.
The size of the nearly spherical first lumbar spinal ganglia was 4.5mm×5.5mm and that of the oval shaped first sacral spinal verve ganglia was 6.6mm×22.1mm.
In most of the cadavers the first lumbar verve root sleeve originated from the third quarter of the first lumbar vertebral body. In lower vertebrae the root sleeve origin was progressively higher levels, The first sacral verve root sleeve originated not from the first sacral vertebra but from the fourth quarter of the
