dc.description.abstract[한글] [영문] The purpose of this study was to investigate the psychological care effects on the recovery of the patients who were in the Neuro-Surgery Constant Care Unit of Severance Hospital from July ?? to Aug. 31, 1972. This study was based on a sample of 62 short term patients. The level of limited consciousness was defined as any condition from drowsyness to comatose. The purpose of this study was; 1. To make models of psychological care on patients with disturbed consciousness rather than to give distinct results. 2. To maintain a higher level of clinical psychological nursing care. 3. To find out the most successful ways of giving psychological support to the patients with disturbed consciousness. The patients were devided into two groups, onr group of 30 experimental patients, and one control group of 32 patients. The patients who were assigned to the experimental group were given special psychological nursing care. This care was given by this writer and other trained staff. The following steps were used; 1. Direct care given by nurses oriented to this study a. The nurse approached the patient with verbal communications. Also no body-restraints were used. b. Consideration was given to the patient's spiritual needs by asking his relatives if he would like to see the chaplain, and by pinning a religious medal to his or her hospital gown. 2. Family Teaching and Orientation a. The nurses and the trained staff advised the relatives to verbally communicate with the patient. b. All the trained nurses taught that a calm and peaceful attitude around the patient was necessary. c. One hour each day was spent educating the relatives in this psychological care. 3. Environment; a. Everything was kept in an orderly fashion. b. There was noise control and unnecessary stimulation was kept at a minimum. To evaluate the patient's level of psychological response aspects of physical response were measured in the following areas: 1. The patient's ability to urinate. 2. Absence of complications. 3. Tracheotomy duration. 4. Tube feeding duration. 5. O^^2 inhalation ant its length of necessity. 6. State of consciousness and its duration. 7. Vital signs including pupil reflex. 8. Voluntary and involuntary muscle responses. As a results of the study I formed 3 Null Hypothesis: 1st Null Hypothesis The psychological care of parient with disturbed consciousness had no effect on the period needed for recovery of consciousness. 2nd Null Hypothesis The psychological care of patients with disturbed conscieusness had no effect on the length of time foley cather was needed, tube feeding and trachoitomy duretion and O^^2 inhalition 3rd Null Hypothesis The psychological care of the patients with disturbed consciousness had no effect on elecated body temperature. This study showed that psychological care does not affect the physical recovery of the patient with disturbed states of consciousness. But I believe that it is necessary to have a follow up on the patients who have undergone the psychological care approach. I feel that a study for a longer period of time would show that psychological care does have an affect on the patient. Through this study the trained staff nurses have acquired regarding psychological nursing care and its relationship to patient's recovery.-
