In order to find out the real facts regarding the morbidity status tin the

Department of Nursing, College of Medicine, Yonsei University, a study was done

regarding the health of the 600 nursing students who were registered in the

Department of Nursing, and who lived in the student dormitory during the period

from March, 1960 to February, 1965.

The conclusion of this study are follows:

A. Out-patient treatment of students.

1. Gastrointestinal disease occured most frequently and these were followed by

disease related to the skin and connective tissues, respiratory infections and

parasitic infections.

2. The highest incidence of illeness occured in 1963.

3. The third year students show the highest incidence of disease.

4. The most students were treated in the month of July and the fewest students

were treated in the months of October and November.

5. More students went to the Department of Internal Medicine than other

Departments. Next in order of frequency were the Department of Dentistry,

Dermatology, E.N.T., surgery and Ophthalomogy.

6. The majority of the disease treated in the medical cut-patient department

consist of gastroenteritis, upper respiratory infections, pulmonary tuberculosis

and bronchitis Sprains, abscess and carbuncles were treated in the Surgical

Department. Tonsillitis, rhinitis and chronic sinusitis were treated in the E.N.T.

Department.

Dermatitis and eczema were treated in the Department of Dermatology. Hordeclum

and conjunctivitis were treated in the Department of Ophthalomogy and caries and

gingivitis were treated in the Department of Dentistry.

7. Approximately 60 per cent of the students treated in the cut-patient

department were seen only once.

The average frequency of visits per sick student was 2.3, while the average per

student visit was 1.5.

8. The total cut-patient medical expenses for 5 years amounted to 132,370.0 won

which amounts to 326.0 won per sick student and 221.0 won per student.

B. In-patient treatment of students.

1. The highest prevalence was seen in respiratory disease and next in frequency

were gastrointestinal, infections and parasitic disease.

2. The most in-patient cases occured in 1961.

3. The most in-patient cases occured among the third year students.

4. More sick students were seen in the months of July and August while less seen

in October and November.

5. The most students were ill with medical diseases and next in order were

E.N.T., surgery and dermatology.

6. The majority of diseases treated in the medical in-patient department

consisted of acute gastroenteritis, influenzas, upper respiratory infections and

pulmonary disease.

Those treated by the Department of Surgery were acute appendicitis and fibroma.

Tonsillitis and chronic upper sinusitis were treated by the Department of E.N.T..

Dermatitis was treated by the Department of Dermatology.

7. Approximately 77 per cent of the total in-patient cases were discharged from

the hospital before the tenth day and the average hospital stay per sick student

was 10.1 days while that per student was 1.1 days.

8. The total in-patient medical expenses for 5 years amounted to 478,755.0 won

which is an average of 7,253.8 won per sick student and 797.9 won per student.
