Abstract

This study was survey research providing scientific data which were useful in the

solution and prevention of policemen's stress through understanding the

contributing factors.

220 policemen were selected randomly.

They all worked for the educational institute of the policemen's, who were in

police station, national police hospital admitted patient's, the head quarters of

national police, and the police box in Seoul from April 10 to April 22, 1989.

The self-administered questionnatre was designed to consider documents, pre-test,

and preceeding research.

Data were analyzed using the actual number and percentage in personal

characteristics; mean and standard deviation in identifying the factors of stress

using spss; applied T-test and ANOVA to examine significance related to personal

characteristics and factors of stress.

The results were as follow.

1. The mean score of the stress was 3.40 which was comparatively high. To put it

concretely, policemen had stress from social problems (4.06), related to job

(3.83), financial problems (3.66), personal problems (3.23), interpersonal problems

(3.17) and family problems (2.45).

2. Factors which influenced the highest stress were irregular office time which

was caused by the speciality of their work (mean score 4.36), frequently

misrepresentation by mass media (4.25), lower pay than other jobs (4.24), lack of

rest time (4.22), overwork (4.20), lack of social understanding (4.10),

occupational difficulty (4.06).

3. The relationship of personal characteristics and factors of stress was

statistically significant due to differences in duration of work, institute of

work, motivation and function of work.

1) The degree of stress according to the duration of work was statistically

significant in policemen who worked less than 5 years (3.49±0.365) and felt more

stress than policemen who worked from 5 to 10 years(3.23±0.463) (p<0.10)

2) The degres of stress according to the institute of work showed a statistically

significant difference in policemen who worked at the police station (3.64±0.307)

and felt more stress than policemen who worked at the head quarters of national

police (3.27±0.418) (p<0.05).

3) Depending on one's motivation to be a policemen who selected that job because

of vocational aptitude felt the highest depress of stress(3.56±0.304) and

policemen who selected that job because of career choice felt the lowest degree of

stress (3.28±0.394) (p<0.05).

4) The degree of stress according to the function of work was also statistically

significant in policemen who worked at the public safety division felt the highest

degree of stress and policemen who worked at the intelligence division felt the

lowest degree of stress (3.21±0.321) (p<0.05).

In conclusion, policemen felt more stress when facing social problems and

problems related to their job.

There fore, one recommendation is to prepare policemen to manage stress through

use of mental health principles.
