Powdered activated carbon being used to eliminate color, organic substances and some chemicals in the chemical treatment of industrial waste water has been often applied to the biological treatment.
This investigation was intended to evaluate the effect of powdered activated carbon in the activated sludge treatment for night-soi1.
The process of night-soil treatment was designed with pilot plant of conventional activated sludge treatment unit made by MIYAMOTO MFG. Japan. 1,000mg/ℓ of powdered activated carbon was introduced to night-soil waste water and the analysis was undertaken for the composition of powdered activated carbon treatment of activated sludge process and conventional treatment without activate carbon.
The results of study were summerized as follow;
1. An average treatment efficiency were 92% of BOD^^5, 86% of COD^^K2Cr2O7, 97% of SS, 79% of TKN(total kjeldahl nitrogen) and 68% of Color by activated carbon added activate sludge process.
2. As the amount of powdered activated carbon was increased, the solids retention time was increased two days.
3. The removal efficiency was increased 24% of TKN(total kjeldhal nitrogen) as two days of solids retention time was increased.
4. 212g of powdered activated carbon required to remove 1kg of TKN(total kjeldhal nitrogen).
5. 0.084g of powdered activated carbon required to remove 200 ADMI units of color in five liters.
6. The growth rate constant(K) were 2.056 day**-1 and 5,405 day**-1 and half saturation constant(Ks) were 34.5mg/ℓ and 24.56mg/ℓ in activated sludge process of powdered activated carbon added and not added process respectively.
