Abstract
Purpose: There are many studies of childhood pneumonia by Mycoplasma pneumoniae, but a few reports of its manifestation with acute gastroenteritis in Korea. The purpose of this study is to know its clinical characteristics and to help management for it.

Methods: I collected the clinical informations of 207 children who had have been diagnosed with Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia in the Department of Pediatrics, YongIn Severance Hospital, YongIn, Korea from January 2002 to December 2007 by particle agglutination test kit (antibody titer, ?1:160). Among them, clinical features were reviewed in terms of acute gastroenteritis. Other causes mimicking gastroenteritis features were excluded.

Results: Thirty nine patients (18.8%) showed acute gastroenteritis. Their mean age was 4.4±3.7 years old and male to female ratio was 0.85:1. Their clinical features were diarrhea(100%), dehydration(71.8%), vomiting(71.8%), abdominal pain(66.7%), nausea(41.0%), hyponatremia(<130 mmolL/L, 7.7%), low serum CO2 contents(<18 mmol/L, 25.6%). Twenty-two patients(61.5%) developed it after 4 hospital days and 11 patients(28.2%) admitted again because of it. Admission days were significantly longer in acute gastroenteris group(7.8±2.3 days) than in non-gastroenteritis group(6.1±1.7days).

Conclusion: It had a considerable prevalence rate and a significant morbidity. Acute gastroenteritis should be considered and informed its development to patients when mycoplasma pneumonia has found.
