Abstract
Acute appendicitis in children Yong Han, M.D. Department of Medical Science The Graduate School Yonsei University (Directed by Professor Choon Keyu Kim, M.D.) An analysis of 284 cases of acute appendicitis in children under the age of 15 was carried out, which were treated at the Department of Surgery of Yonsei University during the past 18 years period form Jan. 1958 to Dec. 1975. Authers, having reviewed and analysed statistically the clinical features, diagnosis, treatment, complications and morbidity applied to these cases, obtained the results as followings. 1. The disease is rare under the age of 6, and showed progressive increase from 6 to 15 years old. Ratio between male and female was 1.6 : 1. 2. Most clinical features, laboratory findings, complications and morbidity were more serious in the perforated group than non-perforated one and the differences were significant statistically between two groups. 3. The disease in more fulminant in the children than adults and the over-all perforation rate was 34.5% in the children, comparing with 15 to 25% of adult appendiceal perforation and the perforation rate under the age of 6 was very high, 71% 4. Early diagnosis, aided by moderate sedation and frequent examinations, can not be over-emphasized, and the prompt and adequate treatments are essential to prevent serious complications and the morbidity in the children with acute appendicitis.
