Abstract
Blood cultures are an important diagnostic tool for identifying bloodstream infections. They provide information on the identification of pathogens and antibiotic susceptibility to guide appropriate antimicrobial therapy and patient management. Inappropriate blood culture practices can lead to false positive/false negative test results, resulting in unnecessary use of antibiotics, delays in treatment, and increased duration of hospitalization. Therefore, effective quality control measures are necessary to ensure the reliability of results and to minimize risk. This review focuses on key quality control elements of blood cultures, including appropriate indications for blood culture testing, optimal timing, sampling intervals (consecutive sampling vs. timed interval sampling), blood volume required, aseptic sampling, and contamination reduction strategies. Appropriate blood volume collection and standardized procedures are critical to reduce contamination rates, which can be achieved through systematic training of healthcare personnel and continuous monitoring. Technological advances, such as automated blood culture systems, rapid diagnostic panels, and artificial intelligence for optimizing data interpretation and clinical decision support, can also improve the accuracy and efficiency of diagnosis. It is essential to maintain high quality standards and use technological advances in blood culture practices to improve diagnostic results and patient outcomes, and ultimately support appropriate and timely treatment decisions.
