청소년의 스마트폰 의존과 사이버 비행 여부 간 연관성 확인 및 Marginal Structural Model을 이용한 인과적 추론 : 2018~2021년 한국 아동청소년 패널조사를 이용하여

Abstract

Background : Since the 2000s, adolescent delinquency on the internet has increased rapidly, emerging as a significant social issue. Previous studies have suggested a relationship between adolescent cyber delinquency and smartphone dependence. However, most of this research relies on cross-sectional data, and the limitations of statistical methods have hindered the establishment of causal relationships between these variables. This study aims to examine the longitudinal relationship between adolescent smartphone dependence and cyber delinquency using panel data collected longitudinally. Furthermore, it seeks to demonstrate the causal relationship between adolescent smartphone dependence and cyber delinquency by applying the Marginal Structural Model (MSM). Subject and Methods : The study utilized data from the first four years (2018-2021) of the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey 2018 (KCYPS 2018), involving 2,590 middle school freshmen. Complete data for 2,160 subjects were used to apply the MSM after initial univariate analyses and generalized estimating equations (GEE) Results : Controlling for various confounders, smartphone dependence significantly influenced the likelihood of engaging in cyber delinquency. The odds of engaging in cyber delinquency were 1.817 times higher (OR=1.817, 95% CI: 1.610-2.050) for the dependent group compared to the non-dependent group, as analyzed by GEE. After applying MSM, the odds remained significant at 1.703 times (OR=1.703, 95% CI: 1.582-1.834), though the effect size decreased slightly. Conclusions : This study confirmed the causal impact of adolescent smartphone dependence on cyber delinquency using longitudinal data. Effective resolution of adolescent cyber delinquency requires identifying the presence of smartphone dependence issues.

<연구 배경> 2000년 이후 인터넷을 통한 청소년 일탈은 급속도로 증가하고 있으며, 사이버 비행은 점차 심각한 사회문제로 대두되고 있다. 선행연구에 따르면, 청소년의 사이버 비행은 스마트폰 의존 문제와 관련이 있으나 그동안 대부분의 선행연구가 단면자료를 바탕으로 진행되었으며, 통계 방법의 한계로 인해 두 변수 간의 인과성을 도출하지 못하였다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 종단적으로 수집된 청소년 패널 자료를 이용해 청소년의 스마트폰 의존 문제와 사이버 비행문제 간의 종단적 관련성을 확인하고, Marginal Structural Model(MSM)을 적용해 청소년의 스마트폰 의존 문제가 사이버 비행에 미치는 인과적 관련성을 입증하고자 한다. <연구 방법> 본 연구에서는 한국청소년 정책연구원의 ‘한국 아동청소년 패널조사 2018(Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey 2018; KCYPS 2018)’의 1~4차년도(2018~2021년) 자료를 활용하여 2018년 기준 중학교 1학년인 2,590명 중 Marginal Structural Model을 시행하기 위해 Complete data를 구성하여 최종 연구 대상자는 2,160명이었다. 통계 분석은 반복 측정된 스마트폰 의존 문제와 사이버 비행 변수 간의 관계를 일반화 추정 방정식(Generalized Estimate Equation; GEE)을 적용하여 확인하였으며, 추가로 인과적 추론을 위해 역확률 가중치(inverse probability treatment weight, IPTW)를 산출하여 적용한 Marginal Structural Model 기법을 적용하였다. <연구 결과> 연구에서 활용된 다른 혼란변수들을 통제했을 때, 청소년의 스마트폰 의존 문제는 사이버 비행 여부에 유의한 영향을 미쳤다. GEE를 시행했을 때 스마트폰 비의존군 대비 의존군에서 사이버 비행군일 오즈가 1.817배 높았다(OR=1.817, 95% CI: 1.610-2.050). MSM 적용 후에도 비의존군 대비 의존군에서 사이버 비행군일 오즈가 1.703배(OR=1.703, 95% CI: 1.582-1.834)였으며 여전히 유의한 결과를 보였으나 효과크기는 다소 감소하였다. <결론> 본 연구를 통해 종단적 자료를 활용하여 청소년의 스마트폰 의존 문제가 사이버 비행 여부에 미치는 인과적 영향을 확인할 수 있었다. 따라서, 청소년의 사이버 비행 문제를 효과적으로 해결하기 위해서는 먼저 해당 청소년에게 스마트폰 의존 문제가 존재하는지 확인하는 과정이 필요하다.
