Abstract
New Religious Movement(NRM) is one of a representative contemporary social problems. In Korea, there were several events which were related with NRM and they gave a shock and confusion to Korean society. And it is anticipated that there will be more social problems related with NRM. NRM is a very complex phenomenon and it has religious, psychiatric, social, psychological aspects. So it is very difficult to understand this phenomenon exactly and it has caused many confusion. A comprehensive view to NRM is very important to help the people who have problems related with NRM. But unfortunately, many psychiatrists are not familiar with religion itself and the religious affairs. So they have difficuliesto manage the problems which are related with NRM. NRM has the characteristics of charismatic group. So study of charismatic group is essential for the understanding of . NRM. Some studies of NRM reported that members of NRM tend to be relatively highly educated,
came from middle to high socioeconomic level and have been relatively normal people before they enterecl to NRM. But it had been reported that usually they had had severe conflicts with their parents and difficulties when they transited from one state of life to other state. Many members of NRM reported positively what they had experienced in the NRM group. For example, emotional calmness, peace of mind, new strength and enrichness of spirit and abandonment of drug abuse. But follow up studies for long period reported that the feeling of happiness of the members of NRM were less than that of normal controls. Entering to NRM cause many problerrm For example, child rearing problems, marital discordance, divorce, financial problems etc. As a psychiatrist, we can help the members of NRM and their family in -many ways. Treating the family member´s guilt; depression and anger are very important for family members of NRM. Because in many cases, the members
of NRM may have doubts about their NRM group after 13 years from entering to NRM. In that time, the members who have had continuous contact with their family may return to their home. But the members who had not any contact with their family can not leave from NRM group. So encouraging their family to have continuous contact with their family member in the NRM group´ is very important. The ex-members of NRM, have many difficulies in their resocilaization and re-adapting process to society. So psychiatrist should help in this process. In the past, NRM was regarded as something which is related with only foolish persons and as a kind of brain washing. But recent studies reported that entering to NRM is a active and voluntary actions. As the political system of North Korea resembles very much that of charismatic group and NRM group, the study of NRM group is very important to understand north Korea too. NRM gives us very, important information about human being. So psychiatrists should give efforts to understand and study NRM
