dc.description.abstractThe functional roles of sialoglycoconjugates are to mediate cell adherence, to control the viscoelasticity of mucus and to serve as receptor sites for the binding of exogenous macromolecules such as those of bacterial or viral etiology. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the distribution of sialoglycoconjugates and their penultimate sugar in developing murine nasal mucosa. Nasal cavities of mice (BALB/c) were fixed by intracardiac perfusion with 2.0% glutaraldehyde and embedded in Epon812. The serially sectioned slides were stained with Maackia amurensis (MAA) and Sambucus nigra (SNA). And then, the other slides were stained with Dolichos biflorus (DBA) and Arachis hypogaea (PNA) before and after neuraminidase treatment. In olfactory mucosa, all cell surfaces and Bowman's glands were labelled with MAA and SNA from sixteenth gestational day. All cell surfaces were labelled with DBA after neuraminidase treatment. In respiraroty mucosa, all cell surfaces were labelled with SNA from the sixteenth gestational dav. Cilia on a minority of ciliated cells in the mucosa of the septum and nasal floor were stained with MAA. Cell surfaces of respiratory mucosa were labelled with PNA after neuraminidase digestion. However, goblet cells were not labelled with MAA and SNA regardless of aging. Our results indicate that there are different carbohydrate structures of sialoglycoconjugates in the olfactory and respiratory mucosa.-
