Oral rinses are to be used in conjuction with brushing and flossing to promote better oral health and to clean oral areas unreachable by brushing. They must have antibacterial effects, a lasting effect after use, compatibility with oral tissues, elimination of bad breath, non-toxic effect and a long shelf life. Most commercial oral rinses are composed of alcohol, flavoring agents, humectants, surfactants, fluorides and other active ingredients. But oral rinses containing alcohol may lead to xerostomia or oral cancer. The main objective of this study was to manufacture the oral rinse using natural antibacterial agents to aid the prevention of periodontal disease and dental caries. Phytosphingosine known as one of the natural antibacterial ingredients exists in the homy layer under human skin, in relation with treatment of pimples through clinical experiment of it’s solution. We believe that it will have a wide range effects on various bacteria. Therefore we tested antimicrobial effect of phytosphingosine for use in oral rinses. The minimum inhibitory concentration(MIC) test for oral microorganisms, antibacterial efect and cytotoxicity rate to phytosphingosine were tested according to using Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus sobrinus and ActinobaciUus actinomycetemcomitans as bacterial strains. The former strain - S. sobrinus, A. actinomycetemcomitans are causative agents of periodontitis and the latter strain - S. mutans is a causative agent of dental caries. Antibacterial tests of oral rinses were performed by 1 minute contact time with bacterial strains. The results obtained were as follows : 1. Alcohol was contained in seven oral rinse products commercially used in Korea except My sense. 2. Newtrin was best showing 100% antibacterial effect and lower cytotoxicity(32%) among domestic oral rinse products used in this study. 3. The antibacterial rate of commercial oral rinse products was increased with high cytotoxicity rate in most products. Cytotoxicity rate of My sense was low as 29.7%, while antibacterial activity and pH was 47.4% and 4.94, respectively. 4. The pH of the oral rinse in domestic was acidity or weak acidity. 5. Oral rinses containing 0.05% phytosphingosine showed 95.3% antibacterial effect and 81.8% cytotoxicity, which were similar to alcohol-containing products.-
