Objectives: To apply the new concept of surgical therapeutic index to patients who suffered from stress urinary incontinence using cure rate and complication rates of Burch colposuspension, and to develop preoperative counseling tool and objective comparison tool between many different surgical procedures. Material and methods: We reviewed 22 cases of stress urinary incontinence patients who underwent Burch colposuspension from march, 1999 to march, 2000 who diagnosed stress urinary incontinence using urodynamic studies and Q-tip test, and then surgical therapeutic index was calculated with median percent cure rates and median percent complication rate. Results: Surgical cure rates were 81.8%, 81.8%, 90.9%, 90.9%, 95.4%, 95.4% at postoperative 1st month, 3rd month, 5th month, 7th month, 9month, 12th month, and surgical complication rates were 69%, 36%, 31.5%, 27%, 22.5%, 27%, so surgical therapeutic indexes of each postoperative periods were 1.19, 2.27,2.89, 3.37, 4.24, 3.53. Discussion: Surgical cure rate of Burch colposuspension in stress urinary incontinence was 95.4% at postoperative 1 year, and minimum surgical therapeutic index was 1.19, and 3.53 at postoperative 1 year, so Burch colposuspension is relatively effective and safe surgical procedure in stress urinary incontinence.-
