Abstract
[한글] A STORY ON THE ELEVATION OF PROFITABILITY OF S. HOSPITAL - ESPECIALLY WITH EMPHASIS ON THE RATE OF BED-TURNOVER AND ITS RELATION TO PROFITABILITY - Prepared by Hong Young GRADUATE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION, YONSEI UNIVERSITY According to the tendency of increasing the rate of contraction day after day, the national health has been in a severely critical situation, especially since the number of patients with advanced disease has been increasing rapidly. And it si common for these serious patients to be sent to hospital for their medical treatment. Recently, however, the capacity of the present medical organizations and facilities is not sufficient enough to meet such an increasing demand. In such a situation, it is often found that these patients have to return home, because even the general hospital have not enough beds to accomodate the serious patients. Really, this situation is unfortunate from the view point of individuals as well as society at large. In other words, in most of the general hospital at the present time, the sickbeds are always full to capacity. The fact that the sickbeds of the hospitals are full to capacity all the time means that the number of potential admissions exceeds the number of beds. But, this may be also due to the period of hospital treatment and the rate of bed-turnover accompanied with it. In detail, then, the inefficient hospital system may partially reduce the rate of bed-turnover, thus prolonging the stay in Hospital. Because of the resulting shortage of beds, many patients requiring hospitalization are sent home without being admitted. In the light of these conditions, it is the aim of this study to analyse the inconsistent operational system of the hospital which may be the main cause of lowering the rate of bed-turnover, and at the same time to find a method of raising the rate of bed-turnover which would improve the efficiency of the operation of the hospital and make it more profitable. This study has been accomplished on the basis of theoretical research ; in addition, practical research has also been done through coefficient analysis by taking S. general hospital as the case hospital. By examining the analysis of the profit problem in S. general hospital in this study, an effort has been made to find a method to accomplish the original purpose of the hospital by adaption of an improved system for hospital operation. In particular, an attempt has been made to show how the rate of bed-turnover influences profit by analysing various expenses of hospital treatment during admission by taking the actual patients in the hospital as the real samples. By adopting the proposal for profitable hospital operation, the following achievements may be accomplished : First, one of the fundamental purpose of hospital management is to render as large a quantity of service as is possible with the facilities provided. In other words, with efficient use of the existing facilities, it is possible to accommodate a larger number of patients. Second, though the purpose of hospital operation is service of the public welfare, not the pursuit of the business profit, most of the general hospitals in Korea have been confronted deficit operation may be, one of the main causes is the result of an inefficient management system such as the low rate of bed-turnover in the hospital. Accordingly, by raising the rate of bed-turnover, an increase in the profits of the hospital operation can be expected so that the hospital can be operated normally and developed in order to accomplish its social duty satisfactorily.
