Functional imaging and behavioral studies suggest involvement of the ipsilateral hemisphere in hand movements. If this is so, transient disturbance of the motor cortex(M1) with repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation(rTMS) may affect ipsilateral motor movements. We studied 16 healthy right-handed subjects who played a simple, a sequential and a complex keyboard movement. Response time(RT) for each movement and motor evoked potential(MEP) amplitude were evaluated before and after rTMS. Low frequency(1Hz) subthreshold rTMS was delivered to the right-sided M1 and 1-week later it was delivered to the left-sided M1. M1 stimulation on either side induced delayed response time and reduced MEP amplitude in all sequences in both ipsilateral and contralateral hands. But there were no significant differences among the complexities. And also there were no significant differences between the dominant and non-dominant hemispheric stimulation.
Subthreshold low frequency rTMS reduced the stimulated M1 cortical
excitability. And it also can reduce the excitability of the unstimulated M1.
