dc.description.abstract[한글] Studies on the Effects of Cadmium on the Rat's Teeth and on the Compensating Effecte of Chromium Bae Jhin Lee, D.D.S., M.S. Department of Medical Science The Graduate school, Yonsei University (Directed by Prof. Man Su Kim, D.D.S., Ph.D. Asso.Prof. Sook Pyo Kwon, Ph.D.) The purpose of present study is to observe the effect of cadmium on the calcification of young rat's teeth. Ten healthy male and ten female rats were mated. For the experiment, a total of sixty healthy new·born rats were selected, which were divided into three experimental groups: control, cadmium treated, find Cadmium Plus Chromium treated groups. Cadmium chloride (0.1mg) and chromium trioxide (0.1mg) mixed with cadmium (0.1mg) were given orally from 6th to 20th postnatal day everyday. Rata were sacrificed every 6th day, l0th day and 20th day, and serum liver, kidney and anterior maxillary teeth were obtained for the experiments. Biochemical studies roue carried out on the serum to determine the levels of calcium phosphorus and the activity of alkaline phosphatase. Cadmium contents in the liver and kidney were determined Histological changes of the liver, kidney and teeth were observed. The results were an follows: 1. Increasing rate of boby weight of rats which treated cadmium was significantly less as compared with that of the control groups, whereas, the weight of cadmium plus chromium treated group was increased over that of the simple cadmium treated group. 2. Calcium content in serum of the cadmium treated group was slightly increased, however, phosphorus content was decreased, so that P/C^^a ratio was decreased in cadmium treatment. The activity of alkaline phosphatase in the serum of cadmium treated group was elevated. Calcium and phosphorus contents and the activity of alkaline phosphatase in the serum of cadmium treated group showed no sigificant change compared with those of control group. 3. Accumulations of cadmium in the liver and kidney in cadmium plus chromium treated group were significantly less than in those of simple cadmium treatment alone. 4. As for the study of histological change of the teeth, marked thickening of predentin and atrophy of odontoblasts were observed in the cadmium treated group, however, no significant change was observed in cadmium plus chromium treated group. 5. No histological findings were obtained in the liver and kidney of cadmium treated group, nor in the cadmium plus chromium treated group. From the study, cadmium in considered to induce abnormal changes in the anterior teeth of young rats, and chromium has compensating effects to cadmium [영문] The purpose of present study is to observe the effect of cadmium on the calcification of young rat's teeth.
