[영문]To improve recognition and performance of health behaviors among higher-graders at an elementary school, this study applied a multimedia-based health care education program and then compared it with the existing lecture-based health care education for effectiveness.A multimedia-based health care education program means a health care education program composed of eight hours for fourth- and fifth-graders, four hours for each grade. To test a multimedia-based health care education program for effectiveness, unequivalent controlled pre- and post-experimental researches were conducted with fourth- and fifth-graders-60 for the experimental group and 61 for the control group-who met the selection standards from September 20 to October 23, 2005.I developed a measuring tool through literature review and finally revised and complemented it with advice of three professors in nursing science. The questionnaire concerning health behaviors consisted of a total of 20 questions―five about personal hygiene, five about nutrition and exercise, five about safety, and five about mental health-and each of the questions was measured for recognition and performance of health behaviors by the four-point Likert scale. This tool had reliability of cronbach α .873, showing high internal reliability. As for the procedure, pretest was conducted with both the experimental group and the control group after random sampling; then, the experimental group was provided a multimedia-based health care education program for four weeks, one hour a week, while the control group was provided with lecture-based education and, finally, post-test was implemented with both groups. As a health care teacher, I provided health care education based on contents by fields for four sessions, forty minutes a session, in each classroom.Data analysis was carried out by using SPSS/WIN 12.0; homogeneity between the two groups was analyzed by percentage, x2-test, F-test, and t-test; and hypotheses were tested by using t-test and paired t-test.This study obtained the following results.1.The experimental group and the control group were homogeneous in all general properties but the housing type (t=.14.094 p=.003) and health conditions (t=.1.823 p=.042).2. The first hypothesis that "the experimental group provided with a multimedia-based health care education program would have better recognition of health behaviors than the control group provided with lecture-based education" was partially supported.3. The second hypothesis that "the experimental group provided with a multimedia-based health care education program would make better performance of health behaviors than the control group provided with lecture-based education" was partially supported.4. There were significant differences in recognition (t=2.500 p=.016) and performance (t=2.418 p=019) of health behaviors for the field of mental health after the education between the experimental group and the control group.5. In recognition and performance of health behaviors before and after the education, the experimental group provided with a multimedia-based health care education program showed statistically significant differences while the control group provided with lecture-based education showed significant differences for health and exercise but no significant difference for personal hygiene, safety, and mental health. The results are significant in that they provided evidence that continuous education through a multimedia-based health care education program may improve children''s recognition and performance of health behaviors. It is necessary to perform systematic health education and to analyze continuous and long-term effectiveness in the future.-
