[영문]This study examined junior college students, knowledge on the impact of smoking to health attitude toward smoking and smoking habit. Proportions of knowledge, attitude and practice on smoking were compared between the health junior male students and non-health junior male students. Data for the comparison were based on a questionnaire survey conducted to six junior college male students, located in Kyunggi Province in Korea. A total number of 1,777 students responded to the survey which represented about 17.9 percent of the total male students.
The major findings from the survey were summarized as follows:
1. Smoking is generally hazardous to health is widely known to the students. 91.9 percent of health junior college students, 87.3 percent of technique junior college students and 89.0 percent of engineering junior college students knew the
relationship between smoking and ill health.
2. 79.6 percent of the health junior college students indicated that smoking may cause cancer, that the proportion was significantly higher than the proportions of non-health junior college students. More than half of the students, 51.8 precent of
health junior college students, and 56.5 precent of engineering junior college students and 50.3 percent of technique junior college students responded that smoking may cause hypertension.
On the other hand, 54.6 percent of health junior college students misunderstood that smoking helps fatigue recovery, where as the proportions of misunderstanding for other college were 53.9 percent for engineering junior college and 52.3 percent
for technique junior college students.
3. Among the health junior college students 75.1 percent of the students were currently smoked and the smoking proportion for the non-health junior college was 79.1 percent for technique junior college students and 77.7 percent for engineering students.
4. On asking attitude toward ceasing smoking in the future, only 7.5 percent of the currently smoking students approved from the health junior college students, whereas the approval proportion was 3.2 percent for technique junior college students and 3.4 percent for engineering junior college students.
5. On the other hand, from the currently non-smoking students, the proportion of students who intended to smoke in the future was 8.5 percent for the health junior college students; 8.3 percent for technique junior students and 9.5 percent for technique junior students and 9.5 percent for engineering junior college students.
