Sialic acid residues are especially known to play a key role in the normal functioning of the glycoconjugates. Recently, with the development of more specific sialic acid binding lectins such as Maackia seed agglutinin(MAA) and Sambucus nigra agglutinin(SNA), it has been made easier to localize the sialic residues by the histochemical staining methods. The distribution and the expression time of sialic acids in the developing murine nasal epithelium, from the seventeenth gestational day to adult, was morphologically studied with lectin staining method. The results are as follows: The WGA positive reaction was noted at basal cells and respiratory cilia from the seventeenth gestational day. We can see the MAA positive reaction in respiratory cilia from the third postnatal day. But, there is no SNA positive reactio in the respiratory epithelium irrespect of aging. 2) The WGA and MAA positive reaction were noted at olfactory cilia from the seventeenth gestational day. However, there is no SNA positive reaction in the olfactory epithelium. These results suggest that cilia contain terminal sialic acid residues and Neu5Ac(α2-3) Gal may be more important to the airway protection and mucociliary function compared to Neu5Ac(α2-6)Gal/GalNAc in murine nasal cavity.-
