Abstract

In the atmosphere, VOCs are widely diffused through the air. About ninety percentiles of VOCs enter into human body by inhalation and lead to harmful effects. To examine the relationships between disease and VOCs exposure levels, personal exposure assessment is very important. So it is important that investigate exposure frequency, exposure amount, personal exposure characteristics. And this study was designed to suggest methodology of personal exposure assessment of VOCs in ambient air.

Therefore, in this study, human exposure assessment was investigated by selecting the group which were exposed at high dose of VOCs and affected by well defined sources.

Hence, as the study subject group, gas station and printing office workers who has exposed at high levels of tractional sources of VOCs-auto exhaust, gasoline gas and petrochemical products-in the air were selected. And gas stations are an open

space to the environmental air and printing office is close space. By comparing the exposure levels of gas stations and printing office, the differences in exposure characteristics were examined. That is, for these groups, the VOCs levels of environmental and personal exposure air were examined, and the methodology of personal exposure assessment was suggested by analyzing the regression equation.

Firstly, the environmental VOCs levels were examined at gas station and its surroundings. As a result, benzene and toluene levels were measured to be higher at gas station than its surroundings relatively, and total examined VOCs values of gas

station were similar to those of surroundings. From these findings, it could be expected that sources originated from open spaced gas station were diffused throughout the surroundings and gas exhaust of automobiles were distributed over gas station. Therefore, it could be identified that the personal exposure sources of gas station workers were not only the gasoline, but also the exhaust gas of automobiles.

Secondly, to confirm VOCs levels of personal exposure by traffic density or oil supply volume, we investigated VOCs in air at urban-located gas station and suburbs-located gas station. The values of TOTAL Ⅰ for environmental air and personal air were 1040.9±0.8㎍/m**3, 1449.1±456.2㎍/m**3 at urban-located gas

station, and 511.2±19.57㎍/m**3, 1002.0±98.7㎍/m**3 at suburbs-located gas station. Also, personal exposure levels were measured 1.5∼2.0 times higher than environmental air levels.

Printing office was close a space and was investigated to compare with gas station of open space. The values of TOTAL Ⅰ were 3495.3±271.3㎍/m**3 in environmental air and 3715.0± 630.4㎍/m**3 in personal breathing zone air, and the exposure levels of these two were similar. We could identify that personal exposure sources were similar to environmental sources presented in printing office-close space.

Linear regression analysis of environmental and personal air were performed(r2=0.891∼1.000). As a result, regression equation were suggested. For example, the regression of equation of benzene is BENZENE^^PERSONAL=83.39+0.92 *

BENZENE^^ENVIRON

In this study, the methodology of personal exposure assessment is suggested by examining the relationship between personal exposure level and environmental levels. In spite of a limitation occurred by small sample number, personal exposure levels could be estimated by examining environmental levels of the stationary

sources.
