Abstract

The army has a certain aim for the national defence, being consisted of the young adults. The army as a hierarchial society forces them to do more collective behaviors than their various individual needs. They face a new situation after leaving their home and society. So they have physical and mental health problems and maladaptation during army life. These physical and mental health problems and maladaptative behaviors make influence on military manpower as well as individual morale.

This study was done for the purpose of providing basic information of the soldiers' health care and health education by identifying the correlation of soldiers' adaptation and health status.

The subjects in this study were based on a convenient sample of 309 soldiers selected from two infantry regiments located in Front Area.

The data were collected by questionnaires through indirect group survey method from 23rd to 27th of September 1983.

The instruments used for this study were a revised soldiers' adaptation scale during army life developed by S.A. Stouffer's et al and a condensed Cornell Medical Index developed by Brodman et al.

Data analyses included percentages, mean, analysis of variance and Pearson correlation coefficient.

The findings of this study were as fellow:

A. Test of hypotheses

1. Main hypothesis: "The higher soldiers' adaptation the higher health status" was accepted.

1) hypothesis 1: "the higher soldiers' adaptation the higher physical health status' was accepted.

2) hypothesis 2; "the higher soldiers' adaptation the higher mental health status" was accepted.

B. Findings from the correlation analyses were as follows;

1. Items such as personal commitment and satisfaction with status & job, personal commitment and approval or criticism the army personal commitment and physical health, personal commitment and mental health were positively correlated.

2. Items such as satisfaction with status & job and approval or criticism of the army, satisfaction with status & job and physical health, satisfaction with status & job and mental health were positively correlated.

3. Items such as approval or criticism of the army and physical health, approval or criticism of the army and mental health were positively correlated.

4. Physical health and mental were positively correlated.

For the future 1 hope to continue the study on the correlation of the soldiers' maladaptation and health status during army life except these variables through the development of the instrument.
