Abstract

The relationship between religiosity and sexual behavior is examined with a

sample of 288 medical college students. We examined the differences of sexual

knowledge, attitude and experience according to whether they have religion or not,

kind of religion, and degree of religiosity using DSFI (Derogatis Sexual

Functioning Inventory). We examined religious participation and priority of

religion in life to estimate religiosity. The results are the following :

1. The religious group shows more conservative sexual attitude and had less

sexual experiences and felt less guilty feeling after masturbation and sexual

intercourse than the nonreligious group.

2. There was no difference of sexual knowledge, aptitude and experience between

religions (Protestant, Catholics, and Buddism).

3. As they were more concerned of religion and more participating in religious

activity, students had more conservative sexual attitudes and had less sexual

experience and felt less guilty after masturbation and intercourse.

4. When comparing religious effect on sexual behavior between male and female

students, the males students were more affected by religion on their sexual

behavior than the female students.
