Abstract

A STATISTICAL STUDY ON THE STATUS OF PERIODONTAL TISSUES BETWEEN PATIENTS AND

PERSONS WITHOUT CHIEF COMPLAINT

Seong Ho Choi, D.D.S.

Department of Dental Science, Graduate School, Yonsei University

(Directed by Prof. Chong Kwan Kim D.D.S., M.S.D., Ph.D.)

The purpose of this study was to compare the status of periodontal tissues

between patients and persons without chief complaint.

706 subjects were selected for this study. The subjects were divided into two

groups: A group; 353 patients in a dental hospital. B group; 353 individuals from

large cities surveyed.

The pocket depth, gingival recession, and the width of keratinized gingival were

examined in each tooth and arch to compare A and B group and then the comparison

between A and B group was performed with T-test.

The results were as follows:

1. In the periodontal pocket, there was statistically significant difference in

the relationship between A and B group.(P< 0.01) The mean value of A group(3.21 ±

1.25mm) was deeper than that of B group (2.52 ± 0.60mm).

2. The deepest pocket depth of A group was seen in the upper 2nd molar (3.96 ±

1.75mm) and the same phenomenum was seen in B group (2.92 ± 0.78mm).

3. In the gingival recession, there was statistically significant difference in

the upper premolar and molar, and lower anterior teeth and premolar of A and B

group. (P < 0.01) The mean value of B group (0.22 ± 0.50mm) was more than that of

A goup (0.09 ± 0.47mm).

4. In the gingival recession, the most prevalence was seen in the lower anterior

teeth of A group (6.8%), and in the upper 1st premolar of B group (21.2%).

5. In the keratinized gingiva, there was no statistically significant difference

in the A and B group. The mean value of A group was 3.92 ± 0.79mm and that of B

group was 3.88 ± 0.81 mm.
