Abstract

stellatoidea

Candida stellatoidea a species of fungus, used to be frequently isolated from

genitourinary specimen. In America, much decreased isolation of the organism was

reported recently, while the decrease was not so obvious in other countries such as

Mexico and Nigeria. The decrease was considered due to the improved personal

hygine. C.stellatoidea has many smilarities and are often suggested to be included

to the species C.albicans.

The isolation rate of C. stellatoidea is not known in Korea as they are not

differentiated in routine Laboratories. Finding the trend of isolation of

C.stellatoidea may add our understanding of some of the principles of infectious

diseases.

The purpose of this study was to determine the current status of C. stellatoidea

isolation in Korea. Species of urogenital isolates of Candida from patients at

Wonju Christial Hospital were determined by tests of germ tube, chlamydospore,

carbohydrate fermentation and assimilation. The strains identified as C. albincans

at Severance Hospital and Wonju Christial Hospital were reexamined for their

possibility of beeing C. stellatoidea. The following results were obtained.

1. The isolation rates of Candida species from urogenital specimens were 0.61% at

Severance Hospital and 1.37% at Wonju Christial Hospital, with mean rate of 1.36%.

2. At the Wonju Christial Hospital more frequently isolated Candida species were

C. albicans and C. tropicalis, 39.4% and 22.9%, respectively. C. stellatoidea was

not isolated

3. All of the 56 isolateds of Candida, presumptively identified as C.albicans at

both hospitals, were wucrose assimilation positive, suggertion none are C.

stellatoidea.

It is concluded that none existence of C. stellatoidea among the clinical

isolated of Candida in this study indicate rarity of the species in the urogenital

specimens of Koreans, although more extensive study may be required.
